ONE-TIME SPECIAL OFFER: Battle Garegga |   Raizing / Electronic Arts
Jap |   2 Players   |   Traditional Shooter
Probably my favourite shooter of all-time. Battle Garegga, from the fantastic Raizing (Soukyugurenati & Kingdom Grandprix), is just a mega WWII/1943-style shooter which does everything right and plays like a dream. Almost everyone who owns this game rates it as one of the best-ever shooters. At first glance, it might appear to be a sort of "Regular Joe" 1943 style game, but on closer inspection, it's without question the most finely crafted shooter ever made. The graphics are outstanding, in a totally non-flashy sort of way - it's only once you really take notice that you see the superb detail and smooth flow of movement. The sound ranges from good to incredible, and really helps create atmosphere in the game. It's one of those games you just want to turn up and feel the bass flow over you while you're playing. Personally, I like to start the game loud, and then tap at the remote throughout the game so that the volume level increases until it reaches a crescendo by level 3, which has hands down the most amazingly pumped-up, adrenaline-enhancing music in the history of shooters!
Like many classic shooters, the gameplay is the essence of it's excellence, and Garegga is one of those great but rare shooters which doesn't reveal all it's cards until after multiple plays. There's a fair bit of strategy to the game - it's not a standard 'get the power-ups and you'll be safe' game (a description which Dodonpachi best fits), but neither is it a game where you constantly have a screen full of bullets like in games such as Mars Matrix and Radiant Silvergun. Of course I have no problem with either of those styles of shooters, but I feel that Dodonpachi can be nothing other than a pure adrenaline rush, while Radiant and Mars are not enough of one. The first couple of levels are not especially difficult, but after that, things get progressively harder, and by the time you hit level 5, Garegga has become one seriously tough shooter! After a few hours you start to notice all the little intricacies in the game that lift it above anything else - for example, the way your ship seems quite large, but there's only the mid section of it which when hit causes you to lose a life. The bosses throw, as part of their huge arsenal, a type of bullet that you can shoot down, so you can actually face the enemy head on, disposing of certain bullets, while weaving through all the others - with the addition of the shrapnel, which doesn't kill you, it all feels so multi-layered. Another aspect of the game which puts it above anything else is the sheer manoeuvrability of your ship. Once you get a good feel for the game, you find yourself dodging bullets in a way that looks like an art form to any spectator. You don't just dodge and weave beautifully, you also find yourself heading right into the thick of things just to pick up a power-up, then somehow getting back into some open space without any concern for your safety. It really gives you so much satisfaction and has to be experienced to appreciate!
As much as any other shooter, I just play this game to experience everything it has to offer. Sometimes I play it to try to finish it, other times I play it to simply see how far I can get on a single life or continue, but every time, I love every single moment of playing it, and I come away feeling refreshed.
Overall, the game just feels so well balanced, and I guess, like the perfectly balanced Layer Section, this is the biggest reason for it being so good. There's a fair bit of fine-tuning to be done in the game, so you may need to make a few tweaks before you feel completely at home. Personally, I like to change the screen option to the most "Zoomed out" which means you're playing inside a thin band up the screen, like a mega-widescreen film turned on it's side. This way, everything's smaller, so you may not be able to play like this on a very small TV, but you have everything onscreen at once, and your ship doesn't move as quickly, and everything just feels more 'right'. There's also a way to get the options in English - (move to page 2 and change the bottom option). Most people at fist comment on getting confused between the enemy fire and the shrapnel which doesn't hurt you. This can be changed so that the enemy fire is red bullets to avoid confusion, but I prefer to play it in it's original form as it just adds another element to the game. These days, it's not cheap, but on the other hand, it's maybe only 30% more than when it was new, and how many new full-price games are this good? For a cool Raizing fansite, check out: THIS
