Mizubaku Adventure (Liquid Kids) - *** | Taito/Ving
Jap | 1 Player | Action Adventure & Platform Action
If you’re remotely into any of Taito’s back catalogue of platform games, or have enjoyed anything like Keio 2 or Silhouette Mirage on Saturn, then this really won’t disappoint. Like its predecessors, Mizubaku blends beautifully drawn, bright and colourful 2D sprites with fantastic playability. Although different in approach to say the Bubble Bobble games, it’s as you’d expect: just as sharp in its execution. Imagine a multi-directional scrolling Bubble Symphony with a pre-determined route and a permanent water bubble up (except you throw your bubbles instead of blowing them). Couple this with the usual power ups, point bonuses and hidden level skips and on the face of it, you’re pretty much getting there. It’s as you play through it you realise there’s so much more to enjoy. Stage by stage you sit there smiling at the screen and humming away to the inexplicably catchy (and very well written) soundtrack, never frustrated or finding any hint of repetition, simply appreciating the polish of the game. Where it really excels though is through Taito’s wonderful innovation with their level design. It constantly surprises and combines so many neat touches with varied enemies throughout, including the larger than life and traditionally weird end of level bosses. In fact there’s possibly only one criticism; it is a bit easy on the earlier levels (no-one has an excuse for dying on the first stage of level 1!), but offset that with the choice of two routes through each level, both with completely different designs, and it does improve the replay value.
If you’re into Taito, 2D action platformers or anything with that unique Japanese feel to it, you owe it to yourself to add this to your collection, as it’s without doubt one of the finest examples of this now virtually extinct genre. And, as most copies find a good permanent home, it’s no wonder it’s very rare these days.

PLEASE NOTE: Over the last few years, this game has become more & more difficult to find, and must now be regarded as one of the rarest on the system.
